05 Little tikes e2008 was a very odd year for the statisticians who compile car sales figures in the United States. They declared the Toyota Camry the top-selling car of that year with 436,617 of them finding homes, followed by the Honda Accord with 372,389 sales. But they were wrong. They foolishly ignored the Little Tikes Cozy Coupe, which notched up 457,000 sales.

Unlike both the Camry and the Accord, the Cozy Coupe has gone through just three facelifts since it first went to market in 1979. It’s still selling. You can own one tomorrow for around $150 with no rego or insurance to pay and no running costs at all. But you’ll need to be short and note; there is no seatbelt.

05 Little tikes cThe original Cozy Coupe was created by former Chrysler designer Jim Mariol and has been one of the most enduring car designs since the Morgan Plus 4. While the Cozy Coupe may be Little Tikes’ iconic model, there are now several variations on it, including a Princess edition, a police car, a fire truck, a ute and a limo.

It’s so ubiquitous that some poor soul in England, desperate to reconnect with his childhood, has built up a Smart into a full-size Cozy Coupe and the road legal replica is for sale for £3,500, or $6750. Seriously.

You’ll find a new Cozy Coupe at most toy shops. And at the Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum in Cleveland, Ohio, where it’s included in a display of the top twenty best-selling cars of all time.
